First and foremost my thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been affected by Covid-19. The sheer scope of the virus was an enormous shock, it's as if the world as we knew it stood still. The reality of the situation hit home for me when I saw the impact Covid-19 had on every aspect of life in Europe in such a short time. I had been following the news when Covid-19 started in China and kept my eye on it, but I never thought it would turn in to this global pandemic. I initially assumed it would be similar to swine flu in 2009 but as we all know now, this is far more serious.
I was actually playing football in Spain with Mallorca Voltors as their season started in January, we had played half a season when the pandemic ensured the ending of the season. All the imports were sent home before the countrywide lock-down. Once I had returned home to Iceland I observed the situation closely on social media to see what would happen with the leagues throughout Europe. One by one, I saw league after league getting canceled with my hopes of playing football in the 2020 season dissipating quickly. So I really wasn’t too hopeful in my chances however I stayed positive and hoped for the best. I learned a lot about my self during that period, maintaining a good diet and a healthy workout routine.
I am very excited to be heading into the first game of the season on Sunday. I can’t wait to stand in the trenches with my brothers and play ball! Just the thought of putting on the game jersey is giving me goosebumps. It feels like it has been forever since we’ve played football, so it’s an unbelievable feeling to have the opportunity to play, especially as we're the second league in Europe to have a season. As an offensive lineman, I am a big believer that technique wins over talent. The offensive line is a very technical position where the best technician dominates. I love the pairing of technique, intellect, and unprecedented violence that only occurs within the trenches. The feeling of dominating defensive lineman and putting them on a highlight reel gives me butterflies. IHOP is opening this Sunday and I will be serving those pancakes.
On game day, I will be excited but also calm, collected, and focused. It will be a little strange to acknowledge that we are the second league to play football globally. So I am humbled to have the opportunity to play the sport I love!
My message to the fanbase is.
We love you.
We work for you.
We will make you proud.
I would like to thank the team at Athletes Forum for reaching out to me! I'm honored to have had the opportunity to speak with you.
I hope this interview has given you a glimpse into the mindset of a professional athlete in Europe and also into the world of Danish American Football.
